Marcel Gromaire, La guerre (War), 1925, oil on canvas, 127.6 x 97.8 cm, Musée d'Art Moderne de la Ville de Paris. |
101 102 103102 - Marcel Gromaire Gromaire (1892-1971) had a similar purpose, founded on his experience as a war veteran. With plastic resources closer to Cubism - although he only followed its broadest principles - Gromaire symbolises the struggle of automata cramped in their coats of armour and helmets, making some of them look like mediaeval knights. This last point is no idle comment. The Great War was simply the latest to date in a long string of destructive wars, and though fought this time by different means, it demonstrated the tenacity of man's taste for violence and destruction. |
