The death 878889 88 - André Mare A close friend of Léger's, Mare had no more taste than he for macabre subjects. When one figures in his work, it is from a distance and with the great sobriety that the Cubist style permits. He shows the effect and not the details of death, and the thick black smoke caused by the impact is sufficient, symbolically speaking, as an expression of distress.
