Suffering 737475 74 - Ossip Zadkine In 1916, Zadkine (1890-1967) enlisted in the French army. The sculptor, friend of Modigliani, became a stretcher-bearer in the Epernay sector. In the same year he was wounded and hospitalised. Both before and after his wound, he drew everyday life - tents, evacuation vehicles and men on stretchers. His sketches bear traces of Cubism which he discovered in Paris after 1910. They form a chronicle devoid of illusion or pathos, first in Champagne and then in the Parisian hospitals where he stayed during his convalescence, and where the image of the cripple was recurrent and became for him the symbol of the period.
