Grosz (1893-1959) attempted a snapshot, working either from memory, or, more probably, from a photograph seen in the press. Around the cloud of the explosion, a circle of dead and maimed bodies is spread out on the ground. Grosz uses cross-hatching to depict the impact and the dispersion. There is a sharp contrast between the clear, hard outline and the vague contours of the bodies, with the opposition of metal and flesh, of the mechanical and the human.
